Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back! I hope you had a very restful and enjoyable holiday. We are looking forward to seeing everyone and to embarking on our new topic.

During this coming half term, our project will be based on the question: What makes Cornwall special? We will be focusing on the human and physical geographical features of our local river. 

To launch our topic we will walk around the Riverbank and over the newly opened bridge which is part of the exciting intertidal habitat flood dense system.

Our focus in English is based on the local myth: Tavy and Tamara. We will perform our version of it for you at our Class assembly on the 24^th May.

In maths we will recap our knowledge and understanding of place value before continuing to explore problem solving and calculation methods.

Our science topic is all about growing plants. We will devise and conduct experiments to find out what conditions support seeds to grow best.

In design and technology we will investigate materials that float and use our findings to design and make boats and rafts.

Staffing: Mrs Copson-Ball (Monday – Thursday) & Mrs Chipperfield (Friday Morning).

Teaching Assistant Team: Miss Evans, Mrs Eagles, Mrs Utton and Mrs Liddicott

Routines: PE lessons will be on Monday and Thursday. Children’s PE kit should be kept in school at all times. Outdoor learning is on Tuesdays and Fridays as well as other opportunities that arise. Pupils need wellies and waterproof trousers that can stay in school please.

Home Support

Reading

Please support your child with reading at home as much as possible. The benefits of reading and discussing what they have read are huge, and it is always wonderful to see the progress that children make, especially as they move onto longer and more complex books. Please try to listen to your child read every day (even if it is just a page or two).

Times Tables

Having confident rapid recall of times tables is extremely useful in all areas of maths and is a very good thing to practice at home. Hit the Button is a very good way to practise individual tables and other key number facts. Please start with number fact to 10, 20 then work on 2, 5, 10 and finally 3 times tables.

Spelling

Below are the statutory spellings for Years 1 to 2. Any help you can give your child with learning and retaining the spelling of these words will be very beneficial.

Rivers topic ideas for this half term could include: independent research about the Tamar River or other rivers around the world. I wonder, what is the world’s longest, deepest, widest river? Growing plants at home and sharing progress please. I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
