School governors at Calstock

School governors at Calstock School

The governing body works across both schools in the Calstock and Stoke Climsland Federation.

The National Governors Association describes the role of governors as, ‘providing strategic leadership and accountability in schools’.

Who are we?

Our governing body has representatives from staff, parents and various sectors of our wider community, bringing a wide range of skills, knowledge and experience. We feel privileged to play our part in supporting the staff and our students; we want each child in the federation to feel safe and to enjoy their time at school. We are proud to support the senior leadership in providing a culture of high expectation and aspiration and in delivering a learning environment where all effort and achievement is valued.

We are made up of:

· 2 Parent governors

· 2 Staff governors

· 6 Co-opted governors

· 2 Associated members

What do we do?

We actively endorse and support the school’s vision and values and consistently apply these to our roles as governors. The over-arching role of a governor is to help raise school standards and this is done through a variety of ways. We meet all together at least once a term as well as each governor carrying out monitoring visits throughout the year. These meetings and visits help collate evidence of how things are going. This enables us to work together to review standards and ensure we are supporting the school to continue to provide a learning environment which allows all to achieve and reach their potential.

Our responsibility

The governors are responsible for 4 core functions:

1. Contribute to strategic discussions at Governing Board meetings.

2. Hold the senior leaders to account by monitoring the school's performance.

3. Ensure that school staff have the resources and support they require to do their jobs well. This includes:

· The necessary expertise on business management

· Access to external advice, where necessary

· Effective appraisal and CPD (Continuing Professional Development)

· Suitable premises in which to deliver education

· Ensuring that resources used, have impact

4. When required, serve on panels of governors to:

· Appoint the Headteacher and other senior leaders

· Appraise the Headteacher

· Set the Headteacher's pay and agree the pay recommendations for other staff

· Hear the second stage of staff grievances and disciplinary matters

· Hear appeals about pupil exclusions
